Aurora County was created October 1, 1879 from Cragin and Wetmore counties.

Archives

     The South Dakota States Archives and the South Dakota State Historical Society, both government organizations work, together to preserve historical records and to make the records available to the public. Both are very friendly to family history researchers. Their service includes three free online indexes: 1- Naturalization Index, 2- Newspaper Index and 3- Newspaper Vital Records Index.
     Genealogical Resources include Naturalization Records, Federal and State Census (1895-1945), Indian Census, WPA Grave Registration, County Records, Women's History, Newspapers (most on microfilm), atlases, city directories, yearbooks county histories and family histories. Most of the newspapers that have ever been published in South Dakota have been microfilmed may be ordered through interlibrary loan.
     Prepayment for services including interlibrary loans is required for all services. Researchers can learn the cost by consulting the State Archives Fee Schedule.
