Many of these records have online indexes where researchers can type in their ancestor's name. Services include a research room, research by the  reference staff and the sale of photocopies. The procedure is to fill out a Research Request From and wait for their response which if include the price of photocopies if a record is found.

Map

1682-present Maps Tracing the Formation of South Carolina Counties - free online at South Carolina Archives
In most areas of the United States genealogy records can be found under the county name. This is the case in South Caroling. Therefore, it is important to understand the formation of counties. Therefore when a large county was divided into smaller counties, most of the time the county that retains the county name will most likely have the records for the rest of the smaller counties prior to the time the small county was formed. To locate the records of ancestors that lived in the area prior to the time the county was created, researchers must look in the county from which the small county was formed. The maps found on this web site assist in locating the earlier county names.
