Pennsylvania Area Key to Genealogical Records

Introduction

Several years ago my mother, Florence Clint published a set of Pennsylvania Area Keys. The AncestorSpy web pages are designed to expand upon her work and provide area keys for every state and county in the United States. I have been told this is an impossible task, however, I will do as much as time will permit to accomplish it. There is a massive amount of genealogy on the internet as well as in repositories throughout the nation. The pages on this site will provide information about the genealogy records and where to find them. This page represents what I have located for an Area Key for Pennsylvania so far.

Area Keys need to contain a little history, how the area began to be settled and organized, beginning dates of counties and parent counties, maps,  a list of towns, information about the state records including when various types of records such as vital records began to be kept, a list of repositories such as archives, libraries, and internet sources that contain records, publications and databases for the state and how we can gain access to them, and other statewide collections such as for church organizations and lineage societies.
If you have ancestors in Pennsylvania, you would be wise to make this make this Area Key one of your favorites so you can come back often. I hope you will find these pages helpful in locating your ancestors.
     Sincerely, Donna K. Clark

Pennsylvania Statewide Genealogy Publications
Pennsylvania became a state in 1787.

Pennsylvania Archives

pub. 1838-1935 The Published "Pennsylvania Archives", description by Florence Clint
The 138 volumes of the "Colonial Records" and "Pennsylvania Archives" were published by the state to meet the demand people made to use the official record and manuscript material housed by the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Through provision of the state, the work commenced in 1838 and continued until the last published n 1935. There are actually 10 series, the fist one commonly referred to as "Colonial Records", the second being published as the "Pennsylvania Archives" with no designation as the the series. (12 volumes). One is cautioned that some references, especially in footnotes,
which say "Pennsylvania Archives" may refer to this first publication only, and not to the whole as we now know it. The Colonial Records and the 9 series of the Pennsylvania Archives, together, are what is referred to as 10 series of Pennsylvania Archives. Continue to the description of each series.
