Essex County, New York Archives

The New York State Archives is a wonderful resource for original records. This archives includes early vital records, military records, court records, probate records, and Naturalizations records. Research Services include a research room, assistance to remote users via e-mail and phone, interlibrary loan and the sale of copies of many of their records. The best way to begin at the archives is to use the online catalog called Excelsior. When I searched for a town where my ancestors lived, four titles came up; three were church records and one was the 1855 census for that area. The list included call numbers and where a copy may be found. I selected a church record and brought up a report that fully described the book. I learned it included baptized children, a register of marriages and a register of deaths. What a delight!

Also included on the site is a directory of associations, university libraries, and societies throughout the state of New York which gives address and phone numbers, even email address for repositories close our ancestral homes.

1822-1900 Town of Wilmington, Essex Copunty, New York, Transcribed Serial Records, Volume 9, Wilmington School Records, 1822-1900 by Dr. E. E. Hinds, Jr. and Tina Didreckson, pub. 2007 - book by Heritage Books
The Town of Wilmington produced School Trustee Annual Reports. While some years are missing, these valuable records give surprising information. Even the earliest reports, mostly quite short, offer a fascinating window into your ancestor's education. Beginning in 1857, the reports list the names of teachers and their terms, and the parent or guardian as well as the number of their children aged four to twenty-one. Not all of the children attended school. The 1889, 1891 and 1892 school census provides a substitute for the missing 1890 federal census. A full name index add to the value of this work.
