The
North Dakota State Archives
works hand in hand with the Historical Research Library which is a
division of the State History Society of North Dakota. It appears that the
archives does the behind the scene tasks while the Historical Research
Library serves the public. The purpose of these organizations is to make
historical documents available to researchers, including family
genealogists. Documents are gathered from throughout the state and
preserved, microfilmed and some are even indexed with a database online
free for your use. There are several ways to obtain access to the records.
Of course you can visit the reading room personally. Microfilm can be
viewed with interlibrary loan or purchased. Research services are
available, however their policy is only to spend 20 minutes of research
time per request. Therefore, they may have what your are searching for,
but did not spend the time required to find it.
The web page I enjoyed the most was the one designed
specifically for GENEALOGY
RESEARCH. Here I discovered Census Records (some state census I did
not know existed), land records, military records, naturalization records,
oral history, pioneer biographies, religions collections and vital
records. This is an excellent place to find original records. |
