The Early History of
Southampton, New York
By George Rogers Howell, M.A., originally published 1887
Now published on CD by Ancestor Publishers
Order # CD0245

In the Authors words, speaking of the genealogical portion of the book "this…has been constructed with great care…from an almost infinite number of isolated records in wills, deeds, family Bibles, church and town records…tomb-stones and from whatever source afforded with certainty a name and a date".  The author found that many living, family members could help identify their ancestors two or three generations back but had very little reliable information before that time. Therefore, he had to collate and compare individual statements to pin down the facts. He states that family group information would have been fuller if letters of inquiry had been answered. Even so pages 201-466 are packed with valuable genealogical facts, names, dates and places.
